MORGAN WING (s) FLY AGAIN!Great
news for Morgan trads (1936 to 2019)!There are no other components that
stamp the century-old iconic Morgan "look" more than our traditional
Morgan wings. So much so that the Company design patented the Morgan
silhouette. Ironically, as they were patenting the wings, the MMC also
moved away from its decades old supplier, Vintage Wing & Radiator
(VW&R) to SuperForm wings in 1995/1996. SuperForms were heat and
vacuum-molded rather than hand beaten as they had been from 1909. It
was a process that created a more perfectly finished wing,
reducing prep-work before painting but the mold costs
severely limited the choice of wing types of which there were about 20
shapes used over the many Morgan trad decades!
This major cancellation put VW&R into a tail spin and a long period of decline.The sad result for our trad Community is that for the last two decades, the choice of ALLl wing types slowly ended. Now Superform has recently ended its supply and the factory has now moved onto a different process, cold-pressing, in Italy.
For trad owners, we can either try repair rotted or accidented wings, a near impossible task for most. Many used Superforms which cost much more and as they are different, must be bought in a set. The assurance of a perfect match was to buy two wings at time. My Morgans, 1984s and a 1990, were all forced to move to Superform which changed their iconic look. Even Morgan purists have been resorting to fiberglass!
THERE IS NOW A SOLUTION TO THESE WOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VW&R, now reborn as Vintage Wing, has been bought over by Nigel Taylor, an individual with rare vintage welding and hand-beating skills. I found Nigel affable, informative and patient. His wings have been examined by the (hopeful) trade, trad owners and we recently arranged a meeting with the MMC! All are content. Rather than making only a limited selection of wings, Nigel makes a very wide selection of classic Morgan wings or can copy anything he has at hand. You Morgan will remain looking as it did originally! His handmade wings are significantly less expensive than anything offered by the Morgan Motor Company.
All Morgan wings are £1550 gbp each plus shipping and packing. Discounts are offered to the trade. Three wheeler and cycle wings are cheaper.
