MORGAN POWER STEERING
by GoMoG
GENERAL
Power steering (EZ Steer) is an option that was first offered by Jack Knight Engineering. Jack Knight,
before its bankruptcy and re-opening, was the original designer and
supplier of the Morgan rack & pinion steering system
used from 1983 until 2007. Though a former emplyee of Jack Knight
reopened the company same year, Morgan opted to have the original Jack
Knight setup, which admittedly always has had a number of design issues to cure,
essentially copied by Quaife Engineering, a respect Biritish auto parts
manufacturer. In sum, the design has not changed, though the
quality is reportedly better (though there were no complaints before) .
However, there are now less options, with Quaife, available on
turns-to-lock. Many more ARE offered for the JK system.
In December 2005, Jack Knight presented an addon power steering option to the Morgan community.
Since that time the same system has been offered by others, including the Morgan Company itself, who even made it standard
on their 2014 Plus 4. Many Morgan dealers will also supply and
install the system. Beware as the pricing varies a lot for the
same system from place to place.
REVIEW
The system adds complexity to a car once famous for its
simplicity and the ease of owner intervention. Sadly, it is often used,
at enormous cost, to cure steering issues caused of poor
maintenance or repair. Vintage cars do not self-adjust, as do current
autos, to cover up the effects of sloppy ownership. As well,
despite the claims, placing an additional intervening power
system between a driver and the front wheels, prejudices and
diminishes the "feel" the car feeds back to the driver, not
only of the steering, but the sense of the stresses on the car, taking
more of the sport out of a sport car. Though it is true that the
classic range has widened over the last 20 years, and that will make
steering heavier, modifications and fine tuning should compensate for
that. If not, consult the GoMoG Manual.
Yet, all this being said, power steering is an excellent answer for those of us who are aging or incapacitated in some way.
