Every older EFI Plus 8 Morgan owner lives with the fear
that someday they will have to replace an odd sized ducting that
connects the filter to the airflow meter and the airflow meter to the plenum
chamber. I've heard of all manner of home repair, from aluminum sheeting
to half a roll of duct tape. They are
exposed to all manner of road hazard and crankcase vapor.
They tend to accumulate filth in and around them, and eventually the wire
reinforced, neoprene impregnated fabric gives up. It may start as a small
tear, or several.
The resulting ingress of unmeasured air wrecks havoc with your air/fuel mixture. You try to get your idle speed down. You try to get it to idle smoothly. Everytime you have it set, the hole changes size and your mixture changes with it. Your car's performance goes haywire and your mood with it. If you don't know this is your problem, it can be a living nightmare.
The problem is threefold. The tubing is an odd size (2.75 inches) it must be stiff enough to retain its round shape and must be flexible enough to do a 90 degree turn in the space of 18 inches. And finally no...the tubing lengths needed are either not available from Morgan or Rover or astronomically expensive.
Remedy One
Try AERODUCT. I purchased a length of this ducting from an airplane supplier in both 2.75 and 3 inches sizes. It is so good that even the oversize 3 inches will do fine.
Try Mission BMC 714-768-6551). It takes a little adaptation, like removing the rubber adapter/seals from the old hose ends, but it works great. It appears to be made of some sort of wire reinforced urethane fabric. Apparently an aviation application.
If you have a local aviation supply house you can query, it must be resistant to petroleum distillates, 2.75 inches in diameter.
The stuff can also be purchased from:
Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Company
201 W. Truslow Avenue
P.O. Box 424
Fullerton, CA 92632
(714) 870-7551
(800) 824-1930 order hotline
(714) 871-7289 fax
Unfortunately the higher grade stuff (fire proof) is bright
orange in color. I opted for the black (fire
resistant) grade instead. This grade is also cheaper.
Even so, it's still better than the original ducting that came on the car.
My only complaint is that AERODUCT is stamped in large letters all along
its lengths.
Remedy Two
(The brand name is Mighty Flow) Premade hoses are normally used on American cars as air ducting between some inlet point and the air cleaner. They are made of some heavy black vinyl polymer around a heavy flat wire core so they are very flexible and come with latch clamps on each end. Specially designed for under hood use. One of the premade hoses (#96060) is 2-7/8 dia by 22" (if stretched out). I bought one for about $8.00. It's a perfect fit, and attaches nice and snug. Its not as heavy a material as the original, but with newer materials, it may be better. At a minimum it should be an good inexpensive substitute until someone starts manufacturing replacements. Later I went into another auto store (Advance Auto) and found that they had them also.
Perhaps this torn hose is the source of my mysterious power loss which sidelines the car after a few minutes. Must have done wonders for the fuel/air ratios...
