"Gentlemen:
I have a '69 4/4 roadster
and am considering replacing the leather interior this spring. The leather
that's currently in the car has cracked rather badly and in some cases
is starting to split.
Do you have some suggestions
of the type of leather to use, things I might like to have the installer
consider as we have the interior torn apart ? Since the total area of leather
would seem to be the bench, seats, door and frame, and shift tunnel and
can't be that much, should a
better than average quality
of leather be considered as the labour is the same ? How many square yards/feet/metres
am I talking about.
I am also considering carpetting the jump area in behind the bench seat on the bottom and sides to help with road noise (like it really going to help), any comments ? Wrapping some insulation on the shift tunnel for noise and leg comfort ?
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Reference Michael Geluch's inquiry regarding an interior for his 4/4, we can supply a standard black leather interior for $2300 or a standard Morgan color range in their standard leather for $2350. That includes a squab cover and all the rest of the interior trim including padding, carried out by Morgan's trim shop.

Dear Michael,
The way to redo your interior is by ordering a kit from Paul Trusser at Morgan motor Company,Ltd. They do a great job and are indeed the source and their interiors fit and work (they have been doing it a few years) They use a fine grade of Connaly leather.
All leather will in time crack in a car without proper
care. The sun and water are the big enemy. Leather conditioners(Lexol, etc.)
help extend the life. However early Morgans due to their nature get wet
inside and get plenty of sun on the interior so if you want longivity have
them do your interior in their excellent leather cloth at which you can
get much longer life out of your interior. You just will not have the smell
of leather but if you miss that the smell comes in a bottle. Go ahead and
have them do the carpets etc for your boot (behind the seats ) as the Super
Sports were done that way complete with material covers
for the wheel arches also. Have fun,
Sincerely,John H. Sheally II
Ok Lorne,
Hi Lorne,
Here in California we buy leather by "hides." a "Hide" (one cow) is about 50 square feet and Barbara says a roadster takes the better part of two hides. We usually use "domestic" leather. The Works used to use Connelly leather (probably still do). Bridge of Wier is another English possibility. It seems to be a bit more "supple" than Connelly but also a bit more expensive.
The gearbox cover is usually insulated with about 1/4 inch of "jute" padding sewn to the leather.
Carpet in the package tray bottom is a nice touch (as are carpet floor mats)but carpet on the wheel arches and back panel is a bit tackey. It is better to use leather with a thin cotton batting between it and the wood (same on the door panels). I do not know if it helps with road noise though.
All the best,
Gerry
You need 3 hides at an average of 50 sq ft per hide to
trim a 2 seater Morgan. I would suggest new inner foams/paddings and probably
cutting new casing boards when you reytrim a car of this age. The Bench
seat may also require attention to the inner springing. Propshaft cover
would benefit from a thin layer of linters felt or bri nylon foam under
the leather. The Gearbox tunnel should have a layer of felt or bri nylon
foam attached to the underside of the Leather cover. It is not a good idea
to use carpeting which
cannot be easily removed for drying outin any area where
water may ingress.
I hope this helps.
